Unit Deck of the Week: ft. Pro Player Liquid Clem
For our second entry into this series, we're excited to chat with Liquid Clem and his strategies in Battle Aces!
11 juillet 2024This week we’ve got a Top Ace, Liquid Clem, discussing with us his play style, winning Unit Deck and advice he’d like to pass on to future Aces.
Clement “Clem” Desplanches joined Team Liquid back in 2020 and has been a rising star amongst pro players in the RTS space, most recently clinching ESL’s Starcraft II Europe Regional Championship with a 4-3 victory over MaxPax.
In Battle Aces, he’s proven to be yet another formidable force, having won against aM PartinG in a 15 Game Series with an 8-7 victory, shoutcasted by Artosis. If you missed out on that competitive match, check it out here.
We’re so honored to have Clem be a prominent player during our first Beta phase and wanted to share his thoughts with you on Battle Aces and his experience so far.
So, Clem, before we jump into that magic combo you’ve got as a winning Unit Deck, could you tell us a bit about yourself and your history with RTS?
Clem:
I remember watching my dad play Warcraft 3 when I was really young, so that was my first contact with RTS games. When I played StarCraft II for the first time, at around 10 years old, I loved the game right away! I’ve been playing it consistently since then and have had the chance to play professionally for a few years now!
Wow started at 10 and now have been playing professionally for a few years! We would love to know your professional take on Battle Aces. What’s been your go-to Unit Deck is? What’s your playstyle approach with this deck?
Clem:
T1: Gunbot, Misslebot
T2: Crusader, Shocker, Mammoth, Dragonfly
T3: Assaultbot, Valkyrie

What I usually prefer to do is plan to go for a quick 3rd expansion before teching up. This Unit Deck relies on good defense early so you have a stronger economy later in the game.
Do you have a favorite Unit from this Unit Deck?
Clem: I’d say my favorite unit is the Dragonfly. It’s very maneuverable and can be used very effectively as a combat unit as well as a harass unit.
For our community wanting to try out this Unit Deck, do you have any tips for them?
Clem: To play this Unit Deck, I think you need to be very aware of your opponent’s Unit Deck to see which unit could be dangerous to you. Both Foundry and Starforge after your 3rd expansion are good with this Unit Deck, but they’re effective against different things.
If my opponent techs up to Foundry before expanding with double Foundry tier 2 units (Mortar and Destroyer for example), or if he techs up to Starforge, I will tech up to Starforge myself. If my opponent has double tier 3 units in his Foundry and techs up to Foundry before my 3rd expansion, I will tech up for stronger ground units and have Assaultbots ready for his tier 3 push.
If my opponent does a 3rd expansion before teching, then the economy is even and you have to choose the right tech that would counter your opponent’s Unit Deck the best.
A key to win with this Unit Deck while teching to Starforge is to be very active with Dragonflies, and to bring Mammoths on time if you need them, or when your opponent is overreacting to the Dragonflies.
WILD CARD! If you were to team up with someone for a 2v2 match, who’s your number 1 pick?
Clem: If I could pick anyone to be my teammate, it’d have to be either Trigger or aM PartinG. They’re good friends of mine and also really good at the game so they can carry me.
That’s awesome that you guys play together and against each other. Thank you so much for your time today and I’m sure we’ll catch you on the ladder!
